The objectives of BIOgeography and Diversity of Interactions in Soil (BioDis) team is to analyse these interactions in their environmental context in order to better understand the functioning and evolution of soils.
The strategy that we have adopted is to study biotic interactions, whilst accounting for the abiotic constraints that regulate or modulate these interactions, in three fields of analysis :
- functional, where we investigate the effects of physical, chemical or biological interactions on emergent functioning in soil ;
- spatial, where the biogeography of interactions is studied in order to show the effects of environmental spatial structures on the organisation of interactions at different scales (from the microbial habitat to the landscape) ;

Soil is a complex system that is the greatest reservoir of biodiversity on earth. It is a fundamental part of terrestrial ecosystems and provides ecosystem services that are of great importance to society, such as food production, the provision of clean water or the dissipation and recycling of
Soil is a highly spatially structured environment in which a multitude of different micro-habitats exist. The physical structure of solid and pore space results in a complex distribution of oxygen, water films and gradients of solutes spanning distances a small as a few micrometers. These environments exist in a highly dynamic state as microbial activity, plant root growth, earthworms or alterations in the water status can all affect their physicochemical properties of the environments and their diversity. This means that the constraints to which soil biological units are subjected can vary rapidly, which in turn can affect their activity and evolutionary trajectories.
The concept of habitat and habitat interacting with biological activity is therefore central to the relationship between biodiversity, and biological functioning and evolution is highly dependent on interactions between biological units and their habitat, more so in soil than in other systems.
Soil ecology must therefore account for interactions between the biotic and abiotic components and well as interactions among organisms.
